Yarm 1914

Killed in action 24 Apr 1915 aged 20. Son of William and Isabel Walker; brother of Edward. Before enlisting he was employed by Mr E Smith of Red Hall Farm, Castlelevington. Soldiers Died states that he enlisted at Stockton from “Eaglescliffe, Yarm” and he is on Egglescliffe’s Memorial. Other evidence suggests he was probably living at Yarm on enlistment in Nov 1914 and in any event his family were local and so he is recorded here. His name is also included on the Methodist War Memorial. Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium

Yarm1914 believe that Harold was born in 1895 in Yarm. In 1901 the family is described as living in the Railway Hotel. This is now the Cleveland Bay situated just over the bridge in egglescliffe. His father Willian is a blacksmith and Harold had 2 brothers, Ernest Temple born in 1893, Edward Walker born in 1897, and sister Frances born in 1899. In 1911 he was working as a farm hand at the Smith Farm called Holdenfield Farm at Castlelevington. In the four roomed family home in Yarm, Ernest Temple was a labourer for his father and Frances was still at school. They were joined by Mary Ellen born in 1902 in Egglescliffe, Maurice born in Yarm in 1904 and Mabel born in 1907. Brother Edward was working at Hunters Rest Farm on the Urlay Nook road owned by Artur Maynell.
